October 2018 at The Dell turned from late summer to autumn the cooler nights starting to turn leaves from green to gold and red especially Acers and the Tulip Tree, with the dropping temperature tender plants and containers were brought into the greenhouse.
We have been picking, eating and storing a good crop of our 31 Apple varieties despite the hot dry summer and a unusual large number of hungry wasps.
Ladybirds and Lacewing are finding their way into our house to overwinter, Honey Bees have been active during brighter days on our borders of Asters and Salvia Amistad.
Mirelle has been planting newly purchased Anemones "Swan Hybrids", perennials, Viburnums and a Malus trilobata to replace a diseased Ash felled in April. |

Autumn Colour in The Dell |
THE DELL Acers, Liriodendron (Tulip Tree) and Malus are at their best showing autumn colour, bark and fruits, Silver Birches are shedding leaves but show pinks and silver on their trunks. Mirelle has planted a Malus tilobata to replace a diseased felled Ash, Malus provide pollen and nectar for beneficial insects and fruit for birds, Cyclamen have been at their best. Autumn also sees many fungi grow on log piles and decaying matter in The Dell.
I was fortunate to have my camera ready as a Buzzard flew over The Dell just above the tree top canopy Rook nests, in the past the Rooks have chased Birds of Prey away.
Moles have been a destructive nuisance in both grass and borders during spring, summer and autumn, reluctantly we had to seek a professional Mole control service. |

The Perennial Border |
The Perennial Border |
THE PERENNIAL BORDER Changes predominately to blue, white and yellow with some red and pink during autumn.
The border is tightly planted to provide succession of colour, interest and biodiversity for as much of the year as possible, plants have to be "Good Companions" growing together throughout the year, regular dead heading, mulching and feeding is crucial.
Aconitum, Anemone. Aster, Sedum and many grasses including Miscanthus and Stipa are at their best during October along with Helianthus tuberosa (Jerusalem Artichoke) and late flowering Geranium wallichianum Havana Blues keep pollen and nectar in abundance for Bees and beneficial insects. |
